School year 2009-2010 is now history. The school year ended Friday May 28 with 8th grade promotion in the morning and high school graduation that evening. This was the first time in more than ten years that High School Graduation was able to be held outside at the Sports Complex. The evening was beautiful and the sports complex looked great. It was a nice send off to the Class of 2010. Ninety-four seniors graduated and we wish them the best.
Although the students and teachers are out for summer, the school continues to be a very busy place. There are several camps and open gyms for students and the life safety work continues. This summer will conclude the asbestos abatement work. Fourteen classrooms in the Elementary Building will be getting new floors, doors, ceilings, lighting, and windows. The boiler in the Elementary School will also be removed in the abatement project. In addition, the brick chimney of the high school will be torn down and replaced with a pipe chimney. The brick mortar in the 1924 chimney is crumbling and potentially could become a safety concern. The A. R. Graiff Building is experiencing some floor and foundation cracks. The building is being evaluated for mine subsidence. We will know more in the near future. The building has been deemed safe for now.
Federal stimulus grant money was utilized to purchase a new bus with a chair lift to transport special needs children to and from their educational programs. Also, a new chair lift will be installed at the High School. This also is a result of Federal Stimulus grant money.
The financial state of the state has caused schools to make cuts and prepare for possible future cuts. The Fiscal Year 2011 budget that was passed by the Illinois General Assembly includes a reduction from Fiscal Year 2010 of approximately $480 million. Mandated Catagoricals were reduced by $330 million and other grants were reduced by approximately $150,000 million.
As of this writing, nearly 500 bills that passed both the House and the Senate remain pending the Governor’s sign or veto decision. Among them is House Bill 859, the so-called budget bill for fiscal year 2011, which was sent to the Governor June 23, 2010. As reported at our June 21, 2010 Board of Education meeting, we are also awaiting funding for the 2009-2010 school year.
State results of the ISAT for the elementary and junior high report that our students are meeting and exceeding in all academic areas. The ISAT results indicate that our students are making Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). The High School Prairie State Achievement Test (PSAE) results have not been received yet.
Registration for the opening of school will be August 4, 5, and 6. The first day of school for teachers is Friday, August 20. Students first day will be Monday, August 23, an abbreviated day with Tuesday, August 24 being the first full day. All summer projects are scheduled to be completed prior to the opening of school. Specifics will be in the newspaper in the near future.
As the month of June closes, I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable remainder of summer. Happy 4th of July to all!
