The 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey reported that 20% of high school students use vapes. SHS has approximately 400 students. Research tells us that the more we talk with our youth about at-risk behavior, the less likely they are to participate in those risky behaviors.

Lydia Roller, a senior at Staunton High School, was recently named to the Illinois High School Association’s All-State Academic Team. She was one of 26 honorees throughout the State to receive the award and is the first Bulldog to be named to the 1st Team in school history. Past honorable mention winners include Kim Phifer (2006) and David Podwojski (2007). In addition to earning a 4.0, Roller has captured All-State recognition in both cross country and track. In cross country, she became Staunton’s first female All-Stater with a 17th place finish as a freshman. She returned to state as a sophomore and junior, finishing second both years. In fact, she is one of only five runners in state history to break the 17-minute barrier in Class 1A. In track, Roller amassed All-State honors as a freshman (6th in 1600m, 5th in 3200m) and sophomore (2nd in 1600m, 4th in 3200m). (Note: Due to the pandemic, there was no state meet in track last year or cross country this year.) Roller has signed an athletic scholarship with the University of Missouri where she will study nutrition and exercise science.

In our community, we share everyday moments with our family, coworkers, and friends. It's easy to overlook these routine moments. But as you go about your day, if you see something that does not seem quite right, say something. Report suspicious behavior to the authorities.

The shortage of referees is real. Why? Low pay, verbal abuse, criticism on social media and not enough younger kids joining the ranks. Please help support our referees at SHS. If you are interested in joining their ranks, contact AD Redfern at TREDFERN@STAUNTONSCHOOLS.ORG.
