5th Grade students presented portraits in the multi-purpose gym of historical figures that they have been learning about in social studies! As the newly appointed president of the Staunton Board of Education, I would briefly like to address the recent events that have caused discussion within our community. My comments are simply to assure our students, parents and staff that the Staunton Board of Education is presently reviewing the concerns brought forth by the Staunton Federation of Teachers. However, the Board of Education has policies that establish a process that we must follow when complaints are made against any student, employee or board member, including the Superintendent of Schools. We intend to follow this process while looking into the Federation’s concerns, and fully intend to offer both the Federation and the Superintendent their legal rights afforded them under Board Policy and any contract of employment before hastily rushing to judgment. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of our community for the civility, respect and decency they have exhibited during this tough time and I ask for your support and patience as due process is followed. The students and staff have been working very hard to prepare for the tests this week that will measure students’ abilities in math and reading.
