Mrs. Shelton's class had a couple special visitors yesterday! Her class raised the most donations to Adopt-A-Pet and earned a pups and pizza party. Gus and Zeus had a great time with the students and everyone enjoyed pizza, too! #TerrierPride #LeadChallengeAchieve

During this holiday season, Staunton Elementary is collecting needed items for our local animal shelter, Adopt-A-Pet in Benld. They are always overflowing with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes. In some cases, the shelter is their home because they have a no-kill policy. Shelter volunteers along with two adorable pups, visited classrooms to discuss proper pet care. They will be returning on Tuesday, December 17th to pick up donations brought in by our students. This is an optional activity, so if your child wishes to participate, they can select an item from the wish list to bring in and place under the Christmas tree. This holiday tradition is always a favorite among students and staff. This year will include a little extra excitement by adding in some competition. Items on the wish list will be grouped according to how many points they are worth. The classroom with the most points will be awarded with a pizza party accompanied with some special guests in attendance. #TerrierPride #LeadChallengeAchieve

The 5th grade ELA classes wrapped up their Middle Ages unit of study by having a funeral for their book character, Don Quixote. Students celebrated this brave knight’s memory by writing and sharing epitaphs after they conducted a funeral ceremony. #TerrierPride #LeadChallengeAchieve

Fifth-graders in Mrs. Best's math class used five pieces of paper plus one yard of masking tape to try to create the strongest chairs possible. To measure which group had the strongest chairs, we used the weight of pennies. Two groups had chairs that were able to hold 215 pennies! #TerrierPride #LeadChallengeAchieve

Unit 2 of 4th grade's ELA curriculum is nonfiction reading focused on the Middle Ages. Students in Mrs. Miller's class were challenged to use text evidence from the Chapter 6 reading to recreate the Battle of Hastings. Using details from the text, students created shields and weapons based on the role they were assigned and what army they were part of. (English: foot soldiers, simple weapons and a shield wall. Normand: knights, archers, foot soldiers and an attack/retreat tactic.) King Herald fell to the Duke of Normandy who was later crowned William I of England. What a great way to bring this battle to life!⚔️ #TerrierPride #LeadChallengeAchieve

THANK YOU VETERANS! Also, a big thank you to Mr. Smiddy, the High School Honor Guard, and 3 of Staunton's finest Veterans (George Compton, Brad Lemke, & Wayne Bruhn), who continue to share their love of country and passion with our students. The Honor Guard, in its inaugural year, graced the students with the presentation of colors as they marched through the halls of SCUSD #6. One could hear a pin drop as they made their way through. A humble reminder how much our troops of present and past, mean to us at Staunton Schools. Happy Veteran's Day everyone!
